STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (September 4, 2014) – Cause Flash, a digital company founded and led by philanthropic producer David Clark, today announced the launch of “Water Now,” a week-long multi-platform event that will mobilize celebrities, brands and global citizens around the issue of clean drinking water.

The event is timed to coincide and celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations on World Water Day, March 22, 2015, a date officially recognized by the 193 Member States of the UN, and aims to bring to light the hard facts surrounding clean water issues.

The social-media event was kicked off by President Bill Clinton at the Clinton Global Initiative with Chelsea Clinton and dozens of public figures ranging from Matthew McConaughey, Morgan Freeman and Scarlett Johansson, to Whoopi Goldberg and Cristiano Ronaldo. The event that raised funds for World Vision water set a new benchmark Clark and others are confident they can surpass.

Organizers have selected World Vision to be the philanthropic and educational partner based on years of experience and success addressing water issues around the world. In addition, the social media conversations from all platforms will be filtered, aggregated and uniquely displayed across all devices thanks to a partnership with Wayin, the social media visualization and intelligence company founded by Sun Microsystems co-founder, Scott McNealy and led by President and CEO Elaine Wood.

Explaining why World Vision was selected as the global beneficiary of the Water Now clean water brand and social media initiative, creator David Clark stated; “Simply put, not only is World Vision the largest non-governmental supplier of clean water in the developing world, they are the gold standard because their holistic approach means that 80 percent of the wells they dug 20 years ago are still operational and providing clean water today. Compare that to an average failure rate of up to 50 percent for wells dug last year.” He continued: “How better to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, then to implement a plan of action in support of it?”

A new study released this week by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC) Water Institute and Water and Sanitation for Africa, a Pan-African humanitarian agency, found that if local water communities collect fees for repairs and train community members to fix the wells, they can remain in use for decades.

The study found that nearly 80 percent of wells drilled by World Vision — which integrates local water committees, usage fees and repair teams into its model of delivering clean water — were still operational after more than two decades. The research, funded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, was presented this week at the World Water Week meeting in Stockholm, Sweden. The Hilton Foundation has provided $80 million over more than two decades to enable water access to an estimated 2 million people.
