THE INSPIRATION
In 2004, the owner of the famed Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ reached out to David Clark because he was interested in doing a documentary about the New Jersey venue where so many iconic musicians had performed over the years. While discussing the history of the venue, it became clear Bruce Springsteen was held in the highest esteem by the owner not only because he had started his career at the Stone Pony 30 years before, but because he had continually supported local charities in Asbury Park throughout his illustrious career. After doing more research, Clark realized there was this mutually deep affection and connection between Bruce and his adopted city and used that as inspiration to create the Red, White & Blue Awards to honor the local hero. With the 4th of July approaching, Clark reached out to the Mayor of Asbury Park to see if he would like to present the inaugural award to Bruce Springsteen on the 4th of July, to recognize all Bruce had done for the city and its people over three decades. The Mayor said yes, and the first-ever Red, White & Blue Awards Benefit Concert honoring Bruce was staged at The Stone Pony on the 4th of July during Red, White & Blue Weekend in Asbury Park.
