Brief – Mayor of Hiroshima

Hiroshima Mayor Akiba and President of Mayors for Peace, an organization which is comprised of over 3,500 Mayors around the world who represent 135 countries, asked David Clark to design and produce a high profile arts initiative to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the atomic bombing of his city.

Solution

David Clark partners with Christie’s Auction House and creates a benefit art auction called “Back to the Garden,” which doubles as a VIP reception for Mayors for Peace, whose members were in New York City to attended the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference at the United Nations. Guests of honor included members of the Hibakusha, the living witness/survivors of the 1945 Atomic bombings. Featured artists and supporters include Jeff Koons, Yoko Ono and Joni Mitchell.

As part of the initiative, Clark secures Yoko Ono to address the General Assembly of the United Nations on behalf of Mayor Akiba and Mayors for Peace. This is noteworthy as Ms. Ono and her family fled Japan following the atomic bombings in 1945. In addition, Clark secures the support of Michael Douglas, a long time advocates for the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
